Introducing new or updated equipment into an operational aircraft environment is rarely straightforward. Even seemingly simple upgrades must integrate seamlessly with existing platforms, processes, and data workflows, without introducing unnecessary risk.
Faced with the challenge of replacing obsolete sensors on a legacy fleet, Musketeer Solutions and High Flight Consulting came together to deliver more than a technical solution. By combining complementary expertise and a shared commitment to practical, high-quality outcomes, the two organisations demonstrated how effective collaboration can create capability greater than the sum of its parts.
Individually, both companies bring deep expertise spanning engineering, integration, and airborne test operations. Together, they formed a cohesive team capable of addressing the full lifecycle of the challenge, from technical assessment through to real-world validation.
While the requirement itself was not inherently complex, the objective was clear; to reduce risk by confirming that a new generation sensor could replace legacy equipment without requiring significant changes to aircraft installations or downstream data processes.
Clarity on, efficiency, and operational practicality, underpinned every stage of the programme with both organisations committed to surpassing the customer’s expectations by providing exceptional services and true value for money.
A key early objective was to ensure that the replacement sensor could be installed without modification to the aircraft. Initial engineering assessments indicated compatibility with existing mounting arrangements, which was then validated through hands-on inspection.
By maintaining the current installation configuration, the programme avoided unnecessary complexity, delivering a solution that was faster to implement, more cost-effective, and significantly lower risk.
For most operators, the real value of any sensor lies not in the hardware itself, but in the data it produces, and the ability to trust and use that data within established systems.
A central focus of the collaboration was therefore ensuring that the updated sensor aligned with existing data formats and workflows. This would allow downstream analysis tools to continue operating without modification, preserving both prior investment and operational continuity.
To achieve this, Musketeer Solutions and High Flight Consulting worked through the complete sensor lifecycle from preparation and installation through to data capture, extraction, and analysis.
Where differences emerged, they were addressed through clearly defined procedural updates. The result was a solution that could be adopted smoothly, without disruption to established processes.
Ground-based validation provides confidence, but airborne testing provides proof. To fully assess performance, High Flight Consulting designed and conducted a structured flight test programme using a Sling TSi aircraft. Both legacy and replacement sensors were installed side-by-side, enabling direct comparison under identical flight conditions.
The test programme deliberately covered a wide range of scenarios, from steady-state flight to more dynamic manoeuvres. This ensured performance could be evaluated not only in controlled conditions, but across realistic operational environments.

A further layer of validation was introduced by referencing data from the aircraft’s onboard avionics, providing an independent benchmark against which both sensors could be assessed.

At the heart of the programme was a simple but powerful principle: validate through comparison.
By capturing simultaneous datasets from legacy systems, the new sensor, and the aircraft itself, the team established a robust, multi-layered evidence base. This approach enabled clear, repeatable assessment of performance and consistency.
The outcome was decisive. With the correct configuration, the enhanced sensor system delivered data fully aligned with legacy outputs, supporting a seamless transition without compromising accuracy or reliability.
This programme demonstrates more than successful sensor integration. It highlights what can be achieved when two agile SMEs align around shared values and a desire to work to a common goal.
By combining engineering and operational flight test expertise, Musketeer Solutions and High Flight Consulting delivered a capability that neither could have achieved working independently. Many organisations may choose to operate together for individual commercial gain, but true collaboration builds trust and shared goals, enabling more flexible problem-solving than a purely contractual, transaction-focused relationship.
For organisations operating in complex airborne environments, this kind of collaboration offers a powerful model; flexible, expert-led, and focused on delivering genuine value - technically, operationally, and commercially.
